Mistaken Awakening

She lie in bed, awake
With a cold stare to the ceiling.
It was snowing outside,
And the empty house moaned and groaned.

The sun was rising,
Yet still felt of night.
She felt so empty, so all alone.
His letter of promise lay beside the young woman.

His warming voice echoed through her mind,
The promise to return for her.
To be together once more.
But the cold had left her, bound and cursed.

The eyes of hers twinkled.
And the sun’s rays beamed through the curtains,
Revealing how beautiful they truly were . . .
-He wasn’t coming back.

She gasped for breath , awaking from a dream.
A dream, a nightmare, her only fear.
It was snowing quite heavily, a cold winter’s night.
Both of them lie, holding one another.

“What is it my dear?” he faintly whispered.
“It came, that dream . . . of us” –she turned to him.
His hand caressed her, and stroked her hair.
Their love showed to one another, to reassure that . . .
-He’d never leave her to let her die.

His warming voice echoed through her mind,
The promise to return for her.
To be together once more.
But the cold had left her, bound and cursed.
